What this article is about

An AI website audit checks whether ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude can find, understand, and cite your site. It is not the same as a traditional SEO audit. Most SEO audits in 2026 still optimize for Google rankings from 2018. They miss most of what AI assistants actually look at.

This is a foundational article. It explains what an AI audit covers, why classic SEO audits leave 80 percent of the work undone, and how to read the score.

Why traditional SEO audits miss most of what AI looks at

A typical SEO audit checks backlinks, page speed, on-page keywords, meta tags, and a sitemap. Those things matter for Google. They have almost nothing to do with how ChatGPT decides which sites to cite.

Princeton University analyzed 21,143 AI citations across 602 prompts. They found that definitions, statistics, and comparison content drive AI citations, not backlinks. Conductor's 2026 AEO/GEO benchmarks found that pages updated within 30 days get 3.2 times more AI citations, regardless of their Google rank.

Here is the gap in numbers.

SignalOld SEO auditsAI audit

Roughly 80 percent of what an AI audit checks is invisible to traditional SEO tools.

What does an AI audit actually measure?

Our engine measures nine categories with 35 plus checks. Here is the structure with weights as of v3.1.

CategoryWeightWhat it covers
AI Discovery15 ptsrobots.txt rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot, Bravebot, Applebot, plus llms.txt, sitemap, semantic HTML5
Content Quality18 ptsTitle, meta, headings, content depth, image alt, citation-friendly patterns
Structured Data22 ptsSchema.org JSON-LD: Organization with sameAs, WebSite, FAQPage, Product+Offer, Review
AI Visibility15 ptsWikipedia presence, Reddit and UGC mentions, brand entity disambiguation, front-loaded answers, citation density, table presence
E-E-A-T Signals10 ptsAuthor markup, content freshness, contact transparency, outbound authoritative links
Technical Health8 ptsHTTPS, canonical, viewport, lang, hreflang, status codes, redirect chains
Performance5 ptsServer response time, page weight, script count
Trust Signals5 ptsPrivacy policy, GDPR signals, security headers
Link Quality2 ptsInternal link structure, broken outbound links, anchor text

Total: 100 points. Score 85 plus is grade A. 70 to 84 is B. 55 to 69 is C. Below that is D or F.

How is the score calculated?

Each check returns one of pass, warning, fail, or info. The score for a category is the weighted average of its checks. The total score is the weighted average of all nine categories.

The weights matter. AI Discovery and Structured Data together account for 37 percent of the score. That reflects current research, which says these are the largest controllable signals for AI citation.

We update the weights when new research arrives. The audit engine has had three major releases so far.

VersionDateNotable change
v1.0April 20267 categories, 30 checks, Czech market only
v2.0May 8, 2026English release, added AI Visibility and E-E-A-T categories
v3.0May 9, 2026Updated AI bot list, refined citation patterns
v3.1May 9, 2026Added 7 new bots, 3 Princeton-driven content checks (front-loaded answer, citation density, table presence)

Which industries lose the most without AI optimization?

Some verticals are more exposed to AI Overviews than others. The pattern in 2026 is clear.

IndustryAI Overview presenceRisk if not optimized
Healthcare88 percentVery high
Education83 percentVery high
B2B Tech82 percentVery high
Restaurants78 percentHigh
Insurance63 percentHigh
Financial advisors60 percentHigh
Local services (plumber, electrician, etc.)50 to 60 percentMedium-High
Entertainment37 percentMedium

If you are in one of the top three categories, every Google search that produces an AI Overview is a potential lost click. The AI traffic that does come through converts about 5 times better than regular search, which means the upside is also concentrated.

Why is AI traffic worth more per visitor?

AI visitors arrive with context. They have just had a multi-turn conversation with the assistant. They have been told what to look for. They click the citation knowing roughly what to expect.

Google clicks are different. The user types a query, scans 10 results, picks one based on title and meta, and lands cold. The conversion gap reflects this.

SourceConversion rateWhy
Google search2.8 percentCold visitor, scanning, comparing
AI assistant referral14.2 percentPre-qualified, has context

Vercel ran the numbers on themselves and shared the breakdown publicly. Ten percent of all Vercel signups now come from ChatGPT, up from less than one percent six months earlier. That is from a single channel. Without AI optimization, you cannot tap that channel at all.

Who needs an AI audit?

Almost any business with a website that sells through it. The strongest cases are.

  • Local services that depend on Google searches like "plumber near me" or "best dentist for kids"
  • Online stores where customers research before buying
  • B2B SaaS where buyers compare options
  • Insurance brokers and financial advisors where users research providers
  • Marketing and consulting agencies whose clients audit them online
  • Restaurants and hotels whose reviews and menus are now AI-readable

The weak cases are pure content sites that monetize through display ads, since the click-through is the only metric and AI eats clicks. For those, the playbook is different. We will write that one separately.

What does a good audit score look like?

The benchmark depends on industry. Based on 200 plus audits we have run.

Score rangeGradeReading
85 plusAStrong. Your site is already designed for AI search.
70 to 84BDecent. Solid foundations, a few targeted fixes will push you to A.
55 to 69CWeak. Missing several major signals, real gap to close.
40 to 54DCritical. AI assistants struggle to find or trust your site.
Below 40FInvisible. Most of the AI search world cannot see you at all.

Median score for an SMB website that has never optimized for AI is 42 to 50. Most fixes that move the score by 20 plus points take a single afternoon. The biggest wins usually come from adding Organization schema with sameAs links, fixing the robots.txt for AI bots, and rewriting the first 100 words of the homepage.

How does the audit fit a small marketing budget?

The audit itself is free at AIFreeAudit. It will not cost you anything to run on as many sites as you want. It is faster than booking a consulting call.

For implementation, the order I recommend.

  1. Run the audit. Get the score and the list of failures.
  2. Fix the structured data. Organization with sameAs, WebSite schema. One hour.
  3. Rewrite the first 100 words of the homepage. Definition, then a number. One hour.
  4. Update robots.txt to allow AI search bots explicitly. Twenty minutes.
  5. Add tables to comparison pages. Two to four hours per page.
  6. Set a freshness habit. Update top pages monthly. Ongoing.
  7. Build Wikipedia presence if eligible. Long project, very high payoff.

Each of these moves the score and you can do them in any order. The free audit will tell you which ones are most urgent for your specific site.

Summary

An AI audit measures whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude can find, understand, and cite your site. It is built on nine categories and 35 plus checks, weighted by current research from Princeton, Conductor, and 200+ live audits. Traditional SEO audits cover only about 20 percent of these signals. AI traffic converts five times better than Google traffic but only if your site is set up for AI to use it. The audit at AIFreeAudit is free, takes 30 seconds, and tells you exactly which signals you are missing.
